Do Something Simple:
There’s a ‘WOW’ Factor in the Practical & Simple

By Pamela Jennings Taylor

Move one step at a time, then rest. Sometimes, as faith people, we try to skip the practical and minimize the daily routines that ultimately get us results. The ‘WOW’ is enticing, exciting, and thrilling. We look for opportunities to say something profound; to give someone a word. So, if we don’t feel this unction, we say nothing at all. I believe the profound – the ‘WOW’ – is in the simple smiles that someone would not otherwise have had. It’s in the asking “how are you doing?” and pausing to hear the answer. It’s in admitting that you are not always right and missed it this time, thus becoming ‘normal’ like them. People want to be seen, noticed, and acknowledged. They are moved by those who are kind and approachable. This will point them to God in ways you can’t begin to fathom.

God is Big. God is Powerful. God is Mighty, and His Thunder is loud. But He’s also quiet, still, pays attention, hears our quiet sobbing, stands quietly beside us, steadies our imbalance, whispers our name, and rocks us to sleep. God stands in front of us to protect. He silences our bullies and fights our battles. Then He bandages our skinned knees, even when we caused ourselves to fall. He wipes our tears. He hides us under His wings, which gives us a rest period to regroup. He brushes the dust off us and tells us to try again when we’ve messed up so terribly. He cheers loudly for us and commands the angels to protect us. He smiles at us and tells us we’re “the best thing since sliced bread” (and brownies). He set a plan for us specifically, carefully, creatively, and perfect to detail. He gives us the resources to carry out the plan. He reminds us over and over that, “yes”, that’s the plan (when we cringe, procrastinate, and say the plan is too big). He is our Maker, our Daddy, our Counselor, and He still believes in us.

We must remember that the supernatural is God’s normal. He can do big things through practical acts, as well as bold, demonstrative ones. My emphasis today is on the practical acts. If we walk daily in hearing and obeying God, the supernatural will function anywhere. These simple acts, done in love, feel just like a mighty move to somebody else.

Although the laying on of hands and a Word from God is supernatural, because I’m God’s hands, then my handshake can also be a supernatural move. My hug? Expect it to be supernatural. A smile? It will change a life. Expect that all your daily interactions have power behind them.

There’s more to what God wants us to be, say, and do. Seek His plan every day and do it. Your daily assignment may appear insignificant to you, but it is impactful to many. Your hello is a ‘WOW’ to someone who feels invisible because you acknowledged them and spoke. Your handshake is HUGE to someone who rarely gets a touch. Your simple act of letting a mom with small children ahead of you in the grocery line is MONUMENTAL to a young mom who is balancing work, kids, grocery shopping, and getting home to prepare dinner. By doing these simple, practical things, you will stay excited and expectant, knowing that you were used by God that day and every day, sharing the love of Christ.

Don’t despise the practical and simple. It’s someone else’s ‘WOW!’
